Still shopping around for what .22 can I want to buy. On another board some folks (including 1 maker I'm interested in) said that I'll get sonic crack from the particular rifle/ammo I use and want the can for. I understand about sub-sonic rounds but I know they won't cycle this particular rifle.
So I'm left with trying a different ammo from what mine was built to cycle on/what's been historically available and cheap OR put up with sonic crack. Which leads me to the reason for posting this thread.... I read a thread on another board that made it sound like sonic crack was a HUGE deal to be avoided at all costs. Although I'm a newbie to the max, I didn't think there'd be no utility whatsoever in having a can if you couldn't get the rounds to stay subsonic in the firearm; that's the impression others are giving me
What say you guys? At this point they've got me thinking it'd be a waste of money to buy a can.

i dont know what rifle you are trying to do this to, nor do i know much about suppressors....but you say sub sonic wont cycle your particular rifle but keep in mind that when you screw a can onto your rifle it will increase the back pressure quite a bit here is an example. this guy built a suppresor for his 1919. the back pressure has sped the gun up to double its standard rate of fire just by screwing on the can the gun now runs at aircraft gun anm2 speed because of the increased back pressure .308 is definately super sonic so you hear the crack www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhFxavK6eNganm2 aircraft gun rate of fire for comparison www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbCe6aEBvlsand now watch this (give it time to load, and ignore the first belt dump - that was with a lightened barrel which speeds the action up quite a bit - function on the cloth belt rate of fire) www.oldsrocketscience.com/1919/1919clips.wmvi guess what im trying to say is just because your gun wont cycle sub sonic ammo without a can on it, doesnt mean it wont cycle sub sonic ammo AFTER you screw the can on but, like i initially said, im not sure what firearm setup you are planning on adding the can too though so take it for what its worth

Thanks for the cool video links.
As of today I'm seriously considering what one of the can vendors suggested.... turning my M4 clone .22LR rifle into an SBR. They seemed to indicate that going to a shorter barrel i.e. 11.5" (vs. the 16") would likely rectify the sonic crack issue, at least in most cases.
Live and learn, live and learn....

Is your barrel already threaded? If so, you can try my .22 can, if it will fit. I use sub sonic ammo with a Ruger 10/22 and it cycles fine.

Winchester Dynapoint ammo sold in bulk packs typically stays subsonic in 16" barrels. It cycles all my Ruger 10/22s as well as the .22 conversion kit in the Vector Uzi I owned. It's a good round that I found to be accurate, cheap, and always stayed subsonic with our altitude and climate. I know .22 ammo is difficult to locate these days, but WalMart and K-Mart do carry Dynapoint. Here's a discussion about Dynapoint over on Subguns.com that you may find interesting. www.subguns.com/boards/mgmsg.cgi?read=702297Photo of my brother-in-law's first full auto experience shooting my .22 Uzi conversion with 10" barrel and Bowers CAC-9 can using Dynapoints. The bolt slap and down range impact was the only sound you heard. This ammo also ran my M-16 Ciener conversion using a 14 1/2" M4 profile barrel in a A3 style upper and stayed subsonic in that length.

Mine has the same thread. It's a Tactical Innovations 'Stratus'. Give me a call if you'd like to try it out. I practice at Desert Sportsman's about once a week.
