The day started warm and sunny, but the light wind increased as the morning progressed. Bill Harty put together five stages for us, staring with:
Stage One, the tie breaker. For a change, we had the choice of pitching either a hand grenade or a horseshoe ! Close didn't count for either, in this case. And then eleven shots alternating two 200yd. targets, shot from prone unsupported.
On Stage Two, we had a wall to use for support from standing position, engaging two targets at 230 and 270 yds. Alternating, eleven rounds.
Stage Three was shot prone supported, ten rounds at three targets at 200, 300 and 400yds. Engage until hit, then move to the next. If you miss, you go back one target.
We used pistol and rifle on Stage Four. Six pistol rounds at a nice big target, but it was about 40yds. out. Then five rifle rounds at a 200yd. target, shot standing unsupported.
On Stage Five, we shot from the bench, but could only use elbow support. Ten rounds at one 200yd. target.
We had our first annual D-Day Anniversary side match. Allied rifles pitted against European Axis rifles. It was pretty close in numbers, with thirteen Allied and fourteen Axis competitors, but the Allies won the day with an average score of 29 against the Axis 26.
We also had the second leg of the 2009 Enfield Award, this time for the No. 4 Enfield.
Possible high score of 60.
