As many of you know, Desert Sportsman's Rifle and Pistol Club is applying for a new use permit, for ten years. There has been an objection against the permit put forward by Howard Hughes Corp, stating that the shooting range doesn't fit in with the 'long term' plans for Summerlin. Howard Hughes Corp. owns the land across Charleston Blvd. from the club. The Desert Sportsman e-board has sent out flyers to all members, to be signed and forwarded to the County Commissioners, to show how many people want the permit to be renewed. If you are a member, PLEASE sign the flyer and mail it ASAP, as the approval meeting is on March 4th. The commissioner name has been left blank on the flyer for you to fill out, as there are several commissioners in Las Vegas. To find out who your commissioner is, please call 455-3500. Thanks
P.S. Even if you're not a member, you could still send a quick note stating that you approve of the range and would like it to see the permit granted. Please mail to: Commissioner ---------- 500 Grand Central Parkway Las Vegas, NV 89106

Desert Sportsman was granted a 5 year use permit. There were several people lined up to speak against the club at the County Commision meeting . We did have a few speak on our behalf also. The LE departments did help as they use the range a great deal for training. The county wants the club to do several things. They want more security for the property along with a change in the hours of operation. These changes will not affect our matches at all. I do not want to get into detail but we will have our work cut out for us when the 5 year permit expires. I would have like to see a 10 year permit granted but I for one, am greatful for the 5 year. I feel it would be foolish for anyone in the gun community to speak against the club as this is just what the anti's would love.To divide us is to conquer us. Remember unity is strength and no matter what your personal opinion is about the club I feel that we should all pull together to make an effort to support the club's leadership. Thanks for all your letters, E- Mails and support, it did make a difference. I guess we will be having a match on Sunday after all. Tony

FWIW, I received the following e-mail from my Commissioner, Steve Sisolak regarding the e-mail I sent him. Maybe it's lip service, but it was nice to receive a reply to let me know my voice was heard.
